On Thursday 1st May 2008 the local elections came to Burscough once more!

With the current national political climate, the results of the local elections were sure to reflect the dissatisfaction of the British population.

With Conservatives already in power in Burscough, it wasn't too much of a surprise that election results showed that they had retained their council positions.

In Burscough East Ward, Conservative George Ernest Pratt received 737 votes, giving him a big win with a 65.6% share of the vote. Labour candidate Kate Anderson received 386 votes giving a turnout of 1137 out of 3286 - 34.6% of registered voters.

In Burscough West Ward there was a win for Conservative candidate Jason Grice after winning 853 votes - a 58.6% share of the entire vote. Cynthia Dereli - representing the Labour party - ran a close race, receiving 602 votes. Only 1458 out of 3943 voters in Burscough West turned out to vote - that's 37% of people on the electoral roll.

There was a recurring theme throughout the local elections and that was the poor turn out of voters. This shows the total disinterest locally with politics and how we can make a difference. Many Burscough residents complain about local issues, e.g. bin collections, council tax and house prices, and yet when given an opportunity to have their say they have chosen to stay at home.

We want to know what you think about this issue. Do you think it is important to vote in elections? What are the local issues that you would like changing? Let us know what you think on our 'Burscough - Have Your Say' messageboard.
