On Saturday 16 February, 6,000 girls aged from five to 25-years-old took over Liverpool, Europe’s 2008 Capital of Culture, to celebrate World Thinking Day. The event was known as World in OneCity and was hosted by Girlguiding North West England. And thousands of girls from all over the UK could easily be spotted across Liverpool wearing distinctive World in OneCity fleece hats!
There was plenty of things to do on the day to keep the girls entertained. Professional arts companies created workshops for the girls at some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including St George’s Hall, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King and the Albert Dock. |

The Mersey ferry and sightseeing buses were full to the brim with Girlguiding UK members, all keen to sample some of Liverpool’s rich cultural heritage. The finale saw all 6,000 girls converged on the new Echo Arena to perform with their recently acquired skills in a spectacular style.
The finale was hosted by Sinead Quinn from BBC One’s Fame Academy and Girlguiding UK’s very own Alice Dean, a Leader from Cheshire. Last year's Guiding Star winner, Isabella Stocchetti, also graced the stage, singing a sensational rendition of Delta Goodrem's 'Together we are one'.
The fun almost certainly didn’t end there! Four hundred and fifty Senior Section members partied late into the night at their Chinese-themed sleepover with entertainment from a rock band and a Chinese dragon display! And rumour has it that not many Senior Section members got a lot of sleep! |

The Volunteer’s Story:
(By Laura Medway, Assistant guide Leader, 3rd Burscough Guides)
When I found out that the World Thinking Day event was to take place in Liverpool, so close to our home town, I didn’t want to miss out – so I volunteered! I was lucky enough to be picked for the PR & Press Team at the event & so got to see behind the scenes on the day. As a volunteer I was charged with finding Brownies & Guides for BBC Radio Merseyside to interview…this was not too hard a task as everywhere I looked there were girls in the famous fleece hats more than willing to tell the radio presenter about their day. |
|
Later on in the day, when the participants were getting ready to perform in the Liverpool Echo Arena, I was greeting the VIP guests and guiding them to the Green Room. This meant I got to see all behind the scenes of the new arena in Liverpool and learn about how such a large venue works. After a long day of working hard(!) the volunteers were able to relax by watching the finale from the VIP boxes! It was a lot of fun to get to see what the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides & Senior Section had been up to all day. The finale included a parade of amazing lanterns, music performances using only recycled rubbish, dancing from several countries, Samba drumming, street dancing and fireworks. |

Personally, it was great to see so many girls in one place, all with one thing in common – guiding. At the beginning of the day, I didn’t know anybody in my team but we all got on great because we were all there for the same reason and obviously all had similar interests. Talking to other girls in my team and hearing about their guiding experiences also gave me the enthusiasm to do even more through guiding. The World Thinking day was a great success both for the participants and the volunteers and from a personal perspective it has definitely made me want to volunteer at more guiding events – bring on the Centenary Celebrations! |
