On 22nd July 2008 Girluiding UK will make history by launching the first all-female crew to sail a Class A tall ship in the Tall Ships Race. Forty Senior Section members of Girlguiding UK will man the ship along with 10 professional crew (also female of course!).

The crew will be racing against some 70 other ships, including 20 Class A square riggers on the first leg of the race from Liverpool to Maloy in Norway. The group will be sailing on the Lord Nelson, a ship owned by the Jubilee Sailing Trust.

The forty crew members were selected from 180 applicants and include 9 girls who have physical disabilities.

This adventure is a great feat for the organisation and gives the forty guiding members the opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends whilst also proving that women can do it just as well as men!

The Norway sailing experience is just one of the many national and international opportunities that Girlguiding UK gives girls and young women each year. To find out more about the projects that Girldguiding UK currently have planned visit www.girlguiding.org.uk.
