Another important place in Burscough is the canal. The Leeds to Liverpool canal runs through the heart of Burscough and was important in making the village a major transport link in the past. It is no longer used as a working canal but is still popular for leisure barges, walking and fishing.

The canal runs away from the village centre and as we move towards Lathom it branches off towards Rufford. The beginning of the Rufford Branch is known as Top Locks as there are a series of locks which allow canal barges to get up and down the hills.

Top Locks is a lovely place to take a walk or on a sunny day you can sit at the local pub, The Ship Inn, and take in the views.

You can see views of Top Locks and other canal pictures by clicking here.

Another place to fish in Burscough is at a hidden spot called Platts Lake. It is another nice area for an afternoon walk and has been regenerated to make it an attractive local site.
